Headstart Heart

Oh bunny,
_
Will you run far with that heart in your hand?
Hopping and jogging as fast as you can?
Rounding the corners with unwavering purpose
Leaving behind the meandering tortoise
Is this a chase raced for fun or survival?
Is that tortoise your friend or your rival?
Do you grow weary coursing gravel and dust?
Is it your will or your feet that you trust?

A stumble
A fumble
A heart on the ground
_
A rest stop
For this lop
If time can be found
_
And so the hare naps ‘neath a sullen old willow
Using a tuffet of leaves for his pillow
_
The tortoise plods on sensing his chance
Determined to find a way to advance
Quietly he spies the slumbering bunny
Picks up the heart and begins to feel sunny
Lifting and stretching one leg at a go
Each measured footfall achingly slow
_
Slumbering bunny wakes with a start
Thinks to himself “this nap wasn’t smart”
Looks at turtle tracks in the pebbles and dirt
“If I lose this race now my pride’s gonna hurt”
He leaps to the path, swift as an arrow
He closes the gap, the lead grows narrow
_
Bunny leans in, one last hop and a sprint
Tortoise plods on, not taking the hint
Here comes the finish! The crowd is uproarious!
The bunny was fast, but the turtle’s victorious!
_
The tortoise turns round to hand bunny the heart
“Thought I was a goner way back at the start”
“So take this my gift for pausing to nap”
“But next time we race don’t be such a sap!”
