A poet’s riposte: Don’t cross me or I’ll take every bad thing in your life and make it verse.

I don’t understand the point of the new Klout. If the idea is to measure and, perhaps, grow my influence, why would sharing content they suggest I share, content that they presumably suggest to lots of people to share, why would this improve my influence? It seems to me that it would improve Klout’s ability to boost sponsored content, but only demonstrate my ability at being at worst a parrot and at best a member of the choir. I aspire to neither.

Words of wine
By Doodleslice 2014-02-04

Words of wine
Pressing flowers
Devoted mind
Rigorous and blank
A petal wrung
A wisp of dew
And lovers’ true
Words
Collected by the barrel
Sipped from a flute
Residue of dreams
Intoxicate the brute
Words to rhyme the frost
Get lost
Or drunk
But hang on
To every fermented foot
Of vinegar or verse
Until you’ve drunk your fill
Then step aside
And let them spill.

It’s a funny universe. Yesterday on my podcast I asked Andrea Lewicki if she knew how to work a slide rule – not something that typically comes up in my daily conversation, but besides being a project artist, she went to engineering school. Now as it happens, my better half, Julie, did not hear the show because she was in the mountains visiting her dad. I didn’t end up seeing her until after I got home from improv class late last night, but when I came in there was an item in a leather sheath sitting on the counter waiting for me. I said “what’s this?” She said, “My dad thought you might like to have his old slide rule.” Too weird.

A Lullaby
2014-02-02 by Doodleslice

Close your eyes, hush your sighs
A land beyond knowing
Is where we are going
A-drifting and rowing
Under starlight’s disguise

Far away, on our way
In dreams we will travel
Where puzzles unravel
A steed with no saddle
Shall saunter by your side

Red and green, King and Queen,
With courtly precision
Declare their decision
To free from their prison
The bravest and the wise

Near to shore, stow that oar
Don’t disturb the flowers
Darkest are the hours
Until you learn powers
Of moonbeam and sunrise

Here we are, come so far
And no further to row
Dreamland of glitter’s glow
Above you and below
So sleep now, hush your sighs

This land beyond knowing
Is farther than far
You can’t get here by foot
Or a train, bus or car
But shut your eyes darling
And breath in the night air
Soon you will arrive child
And you won’t have a care
For farther than away
Is never quite so near
As when you shut your eyes
Child, and dream you are here.

I think we need an Atlanta Snow-jam roll call. I just found out one friend spent 12 hours getting home yesterday, and Julie’s stepdad spent 4 hours in the car before giving up and going back to his office and spending the night there.

So Atlanta peeps, what’s your status? Are you home, stuck at an office, in a shelter? Sound off and share your story.
