Doodling in the dark at TEDx Peachtree

Pamela Meyer doodle from TEDx Peachtree

Take permission to play

Today I went to the second annual TEDx Peachtree event. TEDx are locally-organized events in the spirit of the TED Conference. I thought I would try something new today and do a few doodles while actually at the event – normally I do all my doodles at home, in the doodletorium. It was fun to feed off the energy of some inspiring speakers – and a bit of a challenge since I only had a handful of markers with me and it was dark in the auditorium. I hope you enjoy, and I hope I’ll see you at a TEDx in the future!

See my 7 TEDx Peachtree doodles here.

Right Brain resurgent

So where are the posts, David? Yes friends, I’ve been a little delinquent in my writing, but inspired today by a post written by the awesome Fabeku, I decided to just show up.

Now I don’t want you to think I’ve been idle in my absence. I’ve actually been putting out a fair amount of content, but it has been of a more whimsical and decidedly visual bent. I’ve been a doodling fiend. If you’re interested you can check out the magic marker output (along with the occasional picture shot on the go from my phone) by visiting my posterous at http://davidscohen.posterous.com.

I’ve been enjoying this resurgence of my creativity, and frankly a little nervous about ramping up the degree to which I show the world my soft and silly side, but the fact is I preach authenticity in branding, and by gum I mean to practice it as well. (and how often do you get to say “by gum”?) I expect that the current flood of doodle inspiration will abate a bit over time, but it has been bottled up for a while and it feels good to let the drawings flow and not get too judgmental about them. I’ve picked some fairly humble materials to work with too: basically I’ve been drawing on 4″ x 6″ blank index cards and mostly using Sharpies, pens and highlighters. Sometimes I’ll use nicer art markers too – the highlighter palette is a bit limited. I keep it all on the desk so I can take my doodle breaks, scan them and tweet them to the world. So far, the world hasn’t complained, and I’m grateful for that.

I’m also cooking up a new website for Equation Arts. It’s not quite done yet, but I think it will be a better expression of who I am. Here’s a hint of things to come:
There will also be a lot of the color orange ( I love orange), and some crossover doodles will make their appearance there as well.

I hope that people who connect with me know that I’m a big believer that we all have something special to offer the world and each other, but sometimes we find ourselves framed in the wrong context – that “something special” ends up hidden, muffled, suppressed – unable to shine. So the new website is for me a shift in context toward something more authentic. I hope you’ll stick with me through the transition. Thanks! And remember…

It’s been too long since I mentioned anything art related in this blog. To remedy that I’m giving a little publicity to my friend Richard (a.k.a. Visibleman) and the Art Party he is showing some paintings at tonight. Here’s the details:

120 Sycamore Place, Decatur 30030

(Right across from Carpe Diem and the Ice House lofts, and just off of Commerce Drive behind Fellini’s pizza).

Hope to see you there.

Senior Care Wine and Art Auction

Happy Thoughts

I’ve been on a roll lately with opportunities to put my artwork out into the world.  This next display has the added plus of being for a good cause:  raising money for the Senior Care and Activities Center in Montclair, NJ.  On March 7th they will be holding a wine and art auction to help raise money and to celebrate their 30th Anniversary.  For more information visit their web site or call 973-783-5589 Ext. 12.  I will have a handful of pieces for sale to help the cause, along with several other artists.  A special shout-out goes to Jacklyn Kling of KlingArts for her work curating the show, and to my dad for being my biggest fan and keeping me informed about these things.

So what’s the perfect way to spend an evening between the holidays? Well I’m glad you asked….

Why not step out this Friday evening for the last Castleberry Hill Art Stroll of 2007? And as an added bonus, you can stop by the ASODA Gallery (that’s Atlanta Studio of Design and Art), 238 Walker St. #18, where you can see an eclectic mix of paintings by yours truly, David Cohen.

For more info about the Art Stroll, check out the Castleberry Hill neighborhood website. If you haven’t been, it is a fun way to spend an evening – lots of galleries, restaurant, bars and boutiques to explore.
