On this day in 1524, King Henry VIII during a course of jousting with the Duke of Suffolk failed to lower his visor. His face exposed, he and the Duke charged each other with lowered lances despite shouts from the crowd to hold. The Duke’s spear struck the brow of Henry’s helmet and the splinters filled the King’s headgear. An inch or two lower and Henry’s exposed face would have been impaled. The Duke was horrified and fearful of repercussions from Henry’s servants, but the King said it was his own folly and continued to joust six more courses to demonstrate he was unbothered by the injury. #nowyouknow #thisdayintudorhistory
