If I had a rhinoceros
I would name him Claudius
It seems a noble name to me
Had I an hippopotamus
His name would be Hieronymus
And he’d win every spelling bee
Should I chance upon a platypus
I could call him Thaddeus
But to find a platypus… not easy
And everyone knows an octopus
Prefers to be anonymous
When she lurks beneath the sea
Perhaps I’ll meet a squid
Then I could name him Sid
And if he should squirt his ink
While bathing in the sink
I wouldn’t raise a stink
But then again I think
If a drop or two of ink
Should stain my rug of pink
Then I would yell at Sid
“Oh Sid, what have you did!” And I’d be filled with such remorse
That I would need a horse
And her name would be Marie
And a cat named Mabel
Who would sit upon the table
And a dog named Millie
Who would not be too silly
And a bird named Alfred
Who minded just what he said
And a fish named Jimmy
Who would splash and swim and shimmy
But alas, I have no pet
So I cannot name her yet
And yet I have no regret
Because a pet that you name yet
Makes no sense. —
