Frying down the sidewalk
Charlie slipped and cooked his knee
Such a Southern simmer
This Summer’s come to be.
Hot enough Ol’ Charlie?
Heart-bless your burning feet
But as you stand there talking
Your shoes are fusing to the street.
Let’s find shade in Piedmont Park
We’ll feed pigeons as we roast
Toss them sweet, soft breadcrumbs
‘Til we notice that they’re toast.
Oh Charlie don’t be sulky
Autumn’s breeze is coming soon
What’s that you say my friend?
Can it be? It’s only June!
Nevermind my humid prince
This heat won’t beat you down
You’ll be the King of Summer yet
You just need an ice cream crown!
A crown of cones to beat the heat
All fine flavors cold and sweet
And one thing more you’ll find it neat
Yes, Charlie-boy, it is my treat!

Bumberella

There sulked a plaid clad fella
With a tightly closed umbrella
When up trod little Stella
Saying “there there now don’t you cry”
“But it’s so very sunny”
Said he with nose a-runny
And Stella thought him funny
As they stared up at the sky
“What’s wrong with a nice day?”
“Why don’t you laugh and play?
To which our friend did say,
“I want to show you my pretty Bumberella”
“She’s a lovely shade of pink
And she opens in a wink
Oh I wonder what you’d think
If you could see her dancing in a gale”
“But alas it’s not to be
As you can plainly see
There’s no rain to set her free
And so Bumberella remains here in her sleeve”
Stella wept with new found sadness
“Oh it is such a bad mess
Bumberella has no gladness
When she has no reason to leave her home”
And soon the Sun was high
And Stella let out a sigh
At the endless clear blue sky
That had made her happy just before
“In this heat we’ll fade
But we’d really have it made
If we could find some shade
But look around, there is no canopy”
Then faster than a blink
Came a sudden flash of pink
And a laugh bigger than you’d think
A plaid clad lad could muster
“Oh Stella now don’t you see
You’ve set Bumberella free”
He laughed with plaid clad glee
As she looked at him in wonder
“She didn’t need rain at all
All she wanted was the call
Bumberella’s a parasol!
And she’ll keep us cool and shady”
And for a while they stayed
in the umbrella’s shade
Singing as they played:
“Bumberella, rain or sun
Bumberella, so much fun
Bumberella, save us from the weather
Bumberella, sun or rain
Bumberella, pink not plain
Bumberella, we love you forever!”
