Fierce Friend

Oh fearsome friend
Will you defend
The meek?
The weak?
The freak?
The geek?
Oh fearsome friend
Will you defend me?
.
To me my fierce friend!
On you I depend
When bullies intend
To break and to bend
To stamp and upend
Oh please come defend
Meek me
Weak me
Freak me
Geek me
.
Now come the big brutes
I shake to my roots
They taunt and they jeer
I tremble with fear
I’m meek
I’m weak
A freak
A geek
.
Suddenly I hear
A roar all too near
The bullies change gears
And drop all their sneers
My fierce friend appears
To pounce away fears
Flashing orange stripes
The brutes all shout “yipes!”
And scatter like deer
Because we are here:
Meek me
Weak me
Freak me
Geek me
And my fiercest fierce friend
The tiger inside me

Two thumpers upon the sand
Held a contest hand-to-hand
Or was it perhaps paw-to-paw?
.
“You boxing bunnies beware
I expect a fight that’s fair”
That ref, he did not hem or haw
.
The crowd came up to see
Who would the victor be?
Skinny Jim or Fats Mackinaw?
.
Jim was lean and rougher
Fats was stout and tougher
Both were the best you ever saw
.
Jabs were fast and stinging
Hooks set long ears ringing
The crowd gasped with each rabbit punch
.
When the last bell sounded
Bunnies were confounded
Who had won? No one had a hunch
.
Restless crowds mur-muring
Judges all conferring
To decide they were in a crunch
.
The ref he raised Fatty’s arm
Jim said “Fats, ya done no harm”
“In fact Champ, you can pay for brunch”
.
In the diner the real contest:
With knife and fork they’d prove who’s best
These rabbits both knew how to munch
.
In the end Fats retreated
Champ once, now he’s defeated…
‘Twas Jim that ate the bigger lunch
.
And so the contest ended
These sluggers once contended,
Skinny Jim and Fats Mackinaw,
Two friends – the best you ever saw.
