a little art show to wrap up the year

Improvisation Series

So what’s the perfect way to spend an evening between the holidays? Well I’m glad you asked….

Why not step out this Friday evening for the last Castleberry Hill Art Stroll of 2007? And as an added bonus, you can stop by the ASODA Gallery (that’s Atlanta Studio of Design and Art), 238 Walker St. #18, where you can see an eclectic mix of paintings by yours truly, David Cohen.

For more info about the Art Stroll, check out the Castleberry Hill neighborhood website. If you haven’t been, it is a fun way to spend an evening – lots of galleries, restaurant, bars and boutiques to explore.

I hope to see you there! Happy Holidays!

Borrow a brain or two

Today a friend and I had an exhilarating and stimulating afternoon helping another friend rethink his business plan.  When we were done with that, we turned the focus on a presentation that I am putting together for a client.  We ate pizza.  We talked. We argued. We laughed.  And we got a lot of work done — good work.  Almost certainly better work than if we hadn’t spent the time together.

Don’t get me wrong,  I don’t think every task needs to be a group project, and often we do our best work alone, but sometimes you need to get a fresh set of eyes, or a sounding board to bounce your ideas off of.  There is nothing like borrowing a few extra brains when you need to look at a problem that’s got you stuck or are making serious strategy decisions.  The key is to find folks that you respect and trust.

Whether you call it a think tank or a mastermind group or a brainstorming club, you’ll find that it can be an enormous help to your personal and business growth.   Pick people who are smart and who can bring a range of ideas and perspective to the table.  If the chemistry is right you’ll know because the egos will be in check and even if your new idea is getting dissected before your eyes you’ll know it is being done  out of  care for you and your success.  And don’t forget, it is not all about you — everyone gets a turn and everybody benefits.  You may find that you really enjoy sharing your wisdom and helping your friends in the way they’ve helped you. You also may find that your saw is a little sharper for the effort.

Nine square inches

Today I have an exercise for you.  You will need the following items:

  • 2 sheets of paper
  • 1 ruler
  • 1 pencil
  • 1 mirror

Take the first sheet of paper and use the ruler and pencil to draw a 3 inch by 3 inch square.  Now, withing that square box I want you to draw a picture of yourself.  Don’t worry this is not an art test.  If you’re not comfortable drawing, just do the best you can and only spend 10 – 15 minutes on this.

Next, take the second sheet of paper and use the ruler and pencil to draw a 1 inch tall by 9 inch wide rectangle.  Now give yourself another 10 – 15 minutes to draw your self-portrait within that rectangle.

So what’s this all about?  Well, for each drawing you had a similar set of circumstances – the same materials and the same amount of space, nine square inches, within which to make your masterpiece.  I suspect however that the outcome of the two drawings was substantially different.  Which one is more pleasing?  Which one is more interesting?  Which one was harder?  Sometimes re-framing the same set of raw materials can lead to substantially different results.  The next time you are faced with a problem, or feel stuck in a rut, ask yourself how you can re-frame the problem or rearrange the elements to look at the situation in a new way.  You may find that the results are quite surprising and can lead you to unexpected an exciting new solutions.

OK did you really do the drawings?  If so, post ’em on flickr and send me the link!
