The Wayward Salamander And here before me The rascal prince Of mud and scrapes Infernal waif His linen tunic Torn and smudged Snagged on jagged cliffs Besooted in an ashy lair Speak up lad Tell the tale Of dragon’s doom And sword’s avail Tell all! Tell all! And hurry thus Did you parry? Did you thrust? It’s nooning now And bread we break But we would sup On fire and blood So hurry hence Fill our cup Your tale! Your tale! But how you’ve grown A prince no more Just creak and bone What was the lore Of tooth and tusk? Was it yesterday Or days of yore? Tell the tale! Forsooth and soon Camp we make In dusky gloom And dream we might And brighter make The wisdom of the trail Your tale! Your tale! In a room alone surrounded An audience of embers Orange as dusk When nigh the purpling dark A day, a life The tail was grasped The tale at last! A tail was dropped And damp dirt holds The final spark Beneath cool stone In mud once traced The scampering path Of the wayward salamander —- Doodleslice 2021-02-08 #poem #poetry
